Signal Parts for EB Models

We have managed to get virtually all the signal parts etched once more. Just a couple of bits still unable to find of the previous owners. I will probably draw those up again.

A November 2018 Update part 2

At the recent Brighton Circle AGM, Nicholas Pryor brought along his made up examples of the 4mm Type 15 Craven carriages and the Type 20D Brake Van built by Ian Willets and painted by Dave Studley. I was really please with how these have turned out and it has spurred me on to try and get a train of 7mm examples finished for the Windmill meeting next March.
All of these are still available - £30 each for the etches only of the type 15 carriages - I have a few separates. £130 for a set of 5 as below. The other types of 3rd brake that can be built from the etches are the 15I and 15H. The Type 20D brake van with the birdcage and ducket is also still available as a complete kit for £55.

I also had the next 7mm carriage etches with me. They are the Stroudley 6 wheel Dia 18 1st Saloon, the 4 wheel Dia 23 2nd Saloon, the 4 wheel Dia 33 Early 3rd with long lights, the 4 wheel Dia 34 Early Brake 3rd with the long lights, the 4 wheel Dia 30 Early 1st, the 4 wheel Dia 32 Early 2nd and the 6 wheel Early 1st. These are all on sprung underframes the same as the 4mm versions with the centre coupling as an option. Etches only at present. They will be released as full kits with castings early in the new year. Also the Dia 51 Meat Van test etch has been assembled -  a couple of minor changes needed to that before the production etch is ready. Photo of Dapol Terrier with the test.

The 4mm numberplates have been restocked and I also now have all the Terriers plates in 7mm. £3 a set for 4mm and £4.50 a set in 7mm, I will put photos up as soon as a replacement camera turns up. Well a new phone has so this will have to do for now. 7mm scale showing.

As you can see, I am making models of not just Terriers!

Okay, that is it until I get the Pullman being test built again with a camera to record progress. Hopefully not too long!

An Update November 2018 - part 1

Hi All, some long overdue updates over the next couple of days:

I have been very busy on all kinds of railway related matters as well as satisfying the E.B.Models orders. It has taken quite a time to get everything for that range organised in a manner which means we can see the realistic costs of each item, the good news is that, at present, all prices are remaining the same as before, some of the signalling parts are even being reduced a bit.
So, I shall try and organise this into sections and see where we are for each.

Transfers.

This is a low resolution phone image to give you an idea about what is on the now available 4mm scale sheet. It has been professionally printed in Tasmania by Wessex Transfers, is of the waterslide type with very little, if any, excess carrier film. Reports from those using these are excellent. £20 which includes postage. Cheques made payable to Ian MacCormac to the address on the E.B.Models website (see front page link by clicking on ianmaccormacmodels name at top), paypal or bank transfer details obtainable by email to ianmaccormac@hotmail.com.

The 7mm scale sheet is also still available for £25 inclusive of postage. Image on E.B. Models website already.

I am currently drawing lining and lettering for Stroudley Passenger livery transfers in 4mm and 7mm. I shall make these available sometime in 2019. 

The photo shows a low resolution version of 7mm letters at top, 4mm letter at bottom with 7mm lining to the right. I have been using the outlines generated from the etching artwork to ensure I get correct sizes for panels etc. Centre right, to the right of the bufferbeam panel, with all it's colours, is the D tank front splasher using an Albion kit for the size. Below it is for Richmond using E.B.Models as also is the cab side and splasher in yellow. These will again be printed in Tasmania by Wessex as they need white. More when I have something finalised to show in a few months.

Etching

At the recent Brighton Circle AGM, I had managed to get several new 4mm complete kits ready for sale. Namely:

Stroudley 6 wheel 1st Coupe to Dia 38; 

Stroudley 6 wheel 1st Saloon to Dia 18;

 Stroudley 4 wheel 2nd Saloon to Dia 23;

 Stroudley 4 wheel Early 1st to Dia 30, 

Stroudley 4 wheel Early Composite to Dia 31; 

Stroudley 4 wheel Early 2nd to Dia 32; 

Stroudley 4 wheel Early 3rd to Dia 33; 

Stroudley 4 wheel Early 3rd Brake to Dia 34; 

Stroudley/Biilinton 4 wheel Early Meat Van to Dia 51/225.

All the above have sprung underframes, using Bill Bedford's guitar wire springing method. The Early 4 wheelers come with a common underframe etch which allows for close coupling or normal buffers; Westinghouse iron brakes or none, the 3rd brake has wooden brake blocks and rigging associated with it or iron Westinghouse brakes. The 3rds have the long lights.

Pullman.
This is very close to release. It is the early (1875) version, Plan 45, with the open end veranda that ran either singly or in pairs, having buffers at each end. 6'6" or 8' bogies are included so Mars, Jupiter, Alexandra and Albert Edward will be able to be built, these lasting in this state until approx. 1901. There has been a slight set back in that I suffered a burglary recently that has resulted in the production etch I was assembling for instructions being stood on and the casting masters I was working on likewise. I will be starting again on both soon and still hope to have these ready by the Windmill meeting date of the Brighton Circle in March 2019.
The 1881 Pullman Limited will also be able to be modelled as I have completed the etch drawings for Maud and Louise, which ran with Alexandra and Albert Edward, from 5th December 1881. This was the first electrically lit train having banks of Faure accumulators in the brake areas of the two end cars. The four cars were centre coupled and I will provide modification parts for this.
The plan is to then design the etches for the narrow vestibule cars and the early Pullman Pup as well as some others types.
I have to await a replacement camera before I can restart these, soon I hope!

Update on what is going on

If you have read the latest , brilliant LBSCR Modellers Digest 6 then you will have read that David Lowe and I have taken over running Exclusively Brighton Models from Mike Waldron. He stated a wish to retire from kit production as he retired himself, so that he could finish some and complete his layout. So, we both wanted to see the range continue and have therefore taken over the running of it.

Orders to me, David is rehashing the web pages and that will be updated soon.

I have been looking at making more available in 7mm scale and there will be further developments in the next few months.

I intend to keep this blog going to show what I am up to outside of EBM and hope to be posting some good news in the near future.

In the meantime, Mike still looks after the transfers from Italy, I have a limited stock of parts and we plan to order from the etchers approx. every three months and won't be actually keeping much in stock as such. The castings in 4mm will still be supplied by Chris Cox of 5&9 Models and there is a hope to start getting 7mm castings sorted out also.

Broken Knee Stops Play!!

Yes, well; in my attempts to exercise during my retirement I have been walking or cycling locally. Unfortunately I came off my bike last week and ended up in A&E and then admitted to the local excellent NHS facility for a week. I have broken my left knee and am in a splint for a few weeks. I have now returned home and have just about managed to get to my workbench and computer. A bit uncomfortable at the moment but hoping I can at least either get on with modelling or etch drawing whilst I can't walk.
Will update this in a week or so once I have got used to being at home again like this.

Or Just The Sides for 4mm?

I've been asked if I should make only sides for the 4mm carriages and you can buy a Roxey carriage and just swap the sides for other kinds. What are your thoughts on this please?

Crowdfunding for 4mm versions??

I have been asked for 4mm versions of the Stroudley Diagram 18, 23 and 33. I have an order for one off the 18 and 23 and two off the 33. Would anyone else who wishes copies of these to be made available in 4mm please contact me and offer to spread the cost of the photo tooling. I personally do not want 4mm versions of these so will only redraw and make these available if there is enough interest and funding. The approx. costs of the tooling for one sheet with Dia 23 and 18 on and another sheet with two copies of Dia 33 are in the region of £100 for the two with about £25 per sheet for the brass. If 4 people came forward and shared the phototooling it would be about £75 each and you would get 4 carriage etches for that money. If 3 people - £83 each, if 5 people - £70 each.
Please let me know by the end of June 2017 (or after the next Digest/Modelling Notes and Circular, whichever is the later) and I will move this to fruition.

The Dia 33 is an early version with long windows between doors, there being only low seat backs between the compartments here represented by some plasticard.

I'll see if I can get some better photos as these are from my phone and rather poor!

Craven 6 wheeler Type 12F

This is one of the carriages I have always liked the look of and wanted to make a model of. I have completed the trial etch as an early example with upper stepboard and lower footboard but it will also be possible to make it with a continuous upper stepboard if representing a later period.
I haven't quite got the underframe correct on this test but I think it looks nice anyway and will make a couple of changes and then it will be ready.

The roof is only balanced on and I have made four plasticard compartment dividers and just placed them inside for the photo. I will get on with masters for the axleboxes and buffers now.
Whilst building this I discovered that the drawing I was looking at was incorrect as it showed a lower footboard support in the position where the middle axlebox would be - is this archeological re-enactment? The safety chains look better when another carriage is joined in a train, especially from a side view. See this view of a part completed Dia 33 that I am just building next.

Stroudley Carriages

Well I have been building test etches of a couple of Stroudley Carriages. The Dia 40 1st Brake with 4 wheels and an early saloon, the 6 wheeled Dia 18. These are the first Stroudley vehicles I have redrawn from 4 to 7mm and they are looking okay. I think I need to reposition the lower lamp irons onto the bufferbeams though. These are both Westinghouse braked but I included the wooden brake blocks that the early Brake 3rds carried and so the underframe will work for that as well.

So, I need to make the roofs fit a bit better and then I am working on some casting masters so I should be able to sell complete kits in a few months time.

I have a Craven Type 9A to test build next and then I must get the Craven Type 12F 6 wheeler finished and send off for a test of that also.

Having competed the builds of the two Stroudley vehicles, I am happy with the underframes especially, so will be able to draw any other diagram I need so I will get on with some of those also.

Bufferbeam holes for buffers

I have been building some of my stock for the last couple of weeks and drawing up the Craven 6wheel 1st type 12F, more a bit later on when I have a test etch. I sat down this afternoon, after a bit of time in the garden as it is also calls, to fit the buffers to the7mm scale 20D Craven Passenger Brake Van. I etched the holes at 2.5mm and I am trying to fit some NMRS C007 Midland Std round head buffers to it as they look correct from photos. The shanks on these are 4mm diameter. So please check the diameters of buffers before starting to solder up anything, in any set of etches, and open them up whilst flat on the bench as it is considerably easier than if the whole thing is already made up! I used a rat tale file turned counterclockwise in the holes followed by a tapered reamer to get close, then finished off by filing properly with the rat tail file again. It would have been so much easier to drill them out whilst still a flat etch!
I have sent for a test etch, in 7mm, of the Craven type 9A, Stroudley Dia 18 6wheel saloon and Dia 40 4wheel one compartment 1st brake. I will post some photos when I have these and any other bits of things as I make progress, or not! etc.
