4mm Type 15 Instructions

I have changed the layout of the etches when reducing them for 4mm and there are a few differences between these instructions and the ones before for 7mm. The pdf of the photos of the build of the 7mm carriages will help when building in 4mm as they are almost identical. Clicking on the following images opens up larger versions.

£130 for the set of etches to make 5 carriages plus £5 P&P as at March 2017

Photos of the 4mm etches

The top photo shows two Type 15B 2nd Class that can also be Type 15C 1st class by providing extra lamp tops, and a Type 15F 3rd class above these (which I had just started to build when realised I needed this photo so I have already cut out 5 droplights from the top right of the etch). The second photo shows two Type 15J 4 compartment 3rd Brakes and then below this are the three different sides that can be used instead of the 15J sides to make other variants. From the left is the Type 15G sides for a Brake, coupe 3rd, full 3rd coupe 3rd, luggage carriage; then in the middle is Type 15H for a Brake, full 3rd, full 3rd, full 3rd, luggage carriage and then on the right is the type 15I with lantern brake and 3and a half passenger compartments. As in the previous post from today, this is what I am selling for the 4mm Type 15 carriages, these 5 carriages and the three sets of alternate sides for the brakes. All Carriages include clasp type brakes for when Westinghouse fitted or these can be left off and the early style would be just the wooden brake blocks on the brake carriages. The chassis are designed to be sprung, or can be soldered or glued without springing, and will accommodate P4, EM and OO wheelsets. Castings of buffers, axleboxes and lamp tops are needed to be sourced. There are etched screw type couplings provided on every carriage.

Kits/Etches for purchase

I am happy with most of the etching I have been building and am at the stage where I can let people purchase them if they wish.

Carriages so far.

4mm Type 20D Craven Passenger brake with birdcage and duckets full kit is ready at £54 incl P&P; I have 3 of these left. I can order more on an approx 4 week turnaround

I was asked to reduce the type 15 etches to 4mm and have done so. I am just test building the type 15F all 3rd etches, and will be building up the type 15B all 2nd or 1st in a few days. The type 15 GHI and J combinations of Brake 3rd, Brake 3rd luggage and brake 3rd with coupe 3rds and luggage etc. All will be ready. I haven’t got castings for these but Chris Cox has so I will sell these as etches only, with instructions, at £130 for two brakes (any choice of types), and one of each other class, 5 carriages in all plus the extra sides for all types of brake carriage. They have sprung suspension or can be fixed. They need buffers, axleboxes and lamp tops. P&P will be £5 per set. I have 2 sets left but can order more on an approx 4 week turnaround.

7mm Type 20D as above, etches only, £70. £4 for P&P.

7mm Type 15F all 3rd, Type 15B 2nd or 1st, Type 15J Bk 3rd,   etches only with instructions, (recommend SERkits for the axleboxes, buffers and lamp tops,) £55 each etch. Extra sides to make a 15G, type 15H or type 15I (using the type 15J carriage parts with these different sides) will be £15 a set for each type. P&P £4 extra, a carriage, up to a max of £9 if more than one bought.

7mm Type 9C Bk 2nd, etches only with instructions, (SERKits again for the castings) £55. £4 P&P extra.

7mm Type 8B or D 2nd (alternate sides supplied on one etch), (SERKits again for the castings) £55. £4 P&P extra.

7mm Type 13A 1st, I have one of these etches left at £45. £4 extra for P&P.

Postage of the carriages will be combined to a maximum of £9.
All postage costs quoted are for Spring 2017. If the cost of postage go up then so do mine. Cheers!

Contact via email: ianmaccormac@hotmail.com or phone 01253595580 before 9pm.

I am aiming to bring examples to the Blatchington Windmill meeting on 18th March. If people want to collect there I will try and bring them with me. I am travelling about 300 miles by train so may not be able to physically bring everything.

Up and Down photos

Well I have made up a Type 20D Birdcage Ducket passenger brake and here are some photos of it with a Dapol Terrier and the 4mm version. I have yet to sort out any castings for the 7mm version.
£70 for the 7mm etches, £54 for a full 4mm kit (includes the axlebox and buffer castings). £4 P&P either. Prices as at March 2017

Also, there is this photo showing a type 15I in 7mm against the G3 etches I have been asked to produce of a type 15G. I am astonished at the size this will be.

And another of the above. at 7mm scale.

Assembling the Type 15 carriages

Here is a link to a PDF showing how I have built three of the 7mm Type 15 carriages. I shall be adding to this to show how to build other types as I build them myself. Updated 1st March 2017

Up and Down!

Well, as soon as I put the Type 15 etch photos up and showed the 2nd class test at the Brighton Circle AGM last October, I was asked to do them in 4mm.
As soon as I put the photos of the built 4mm Craven Birdcage & Ducket brake van up on here, I was asked to consider scaling this up to 7mm!!!
I have just completed the drawings for both of these as well as a Gauge 3 type 15G 3rd coupe luggage brake, so will be sending these off to the etchers on Monday. Watch this space!
Cheers,
Ian

Updating to Stroudley era

Just been looking at photos of Lewes second station, the Reeves ones, and noticed that this photo shows only an upper, full length footboard and a lamp on the top of the birdcage. I am going to alter this build to look like that and so don't have to file holes in the Craven era lower footboard, just cut it off and solder it in place at the bottom of the solebar instead.

Will post another photo when I have completed this.

Just about finished now as you can see; the roof isn't fixed on at all yet and I haven't cleaned any excess solder/muck off at the moment either. Just glued on the castings and made a longer upper footboard from scrap etch and soldered it over the old top footstep, added the couplings also.
Cleaning up, painting and fixing of roof still to do; probably when the weather improves for painting!

4mm Carriages for LBSCR as well as LCDR

The other thing hat has been happening is I finally got the Craven birdcage and ducket brake checked and etched. I have yet to build another test of this but sometime soon.
The other bits in 4mm are etches for LC&DR carriages for Simon. These will be available later in 2017 as soon as they have been test built. These are two copies of 3rds and a 3rd Brake in the top photo and a 1st, compo and 2nd in the lower photo.

I am also working on the Craven locos again so may have them ready for the Windmill meeting also.
Cheers

Carriages in 7mm

You may have seen a photo in the latest Modellers Digest
http://lbscr.org/Models/Journal/LBSCR-Modellers-Digest-4.pdf
that I have a Dapol 7mm Terrier followed by some type 15 Craven carriages.
I have wanted a couple of sets of these so have drawn and had etched various types which I am slowly building the test etches of.
Type 15B, 1860 2nd class which with extra lamps and better upholstery also becomes the Type 15C 1st.
This shows as far as I have got with this, using some castings from SERKits  (https://serkits.com/) that look a good match. I was particularly pleased with the raised (bolection?) moulding around the windows. This was seen at the AGM and I have been asked by several people to make these available in 4mm as well. Chatting to Chris Cox of 5&9 Models, who has done this in 4mm in whitemetal, he had no objections, saying he had enough on with other projects, so I will be looking into this later.

Next to this is the Type 15J Brake 3rd of 1865 (?)
I have yet to complete the build of this test etch either!
I have also drawn the Type 15F 3rd as shown in the etch below, that also has a few brake parts so I can supply the 2nd with them for when these carriages were braked using the Westinghouse Air Brake. This will be built this week I hope.
I also thought of being able to supply the various other styles of brake 3rd luggage etc. as per this photo (below) of the sides of Type 15G Brake 3rd luggage with 1 full and 2 half compartments as in the top left; the Type 15H Brake 3rd luggage with 3 full compartments with the luggage compartment, top right; and also the Type 15I which gives a Brake 3rd with 3 and a half compartments (bottom right).
I will build these using the rest of the etch of the type 15J enabling me to offer 4 types of carriage from just two etches. 7mm seems to cost a bit more than 4mm so I am please to say that these are all working okay, just a minor misalignment of grab handle holes which are easily drilled through from the correctly sited front part of the carriage etch. Everything else has worked first time.

Then there is the Type 13F and Type 13A, left and right respectively in the photo below.
I have to do a bit more work on the 13F but the 13A is available already.
I have also gone even further back in time to the Type 8D, parts of the original are at the Bluebell, which has already been tried in 4mm, as shown in the blog earlier. Below shows this in 7mm alongside the Type 13A.
and in the following photo is the Type 9C Luggage Brake 2nd again alongside a Dapol Terrier and the 8D.

That is all for 7mm at the moment. I am aiming to get these ready for the Brighton Circle Windmill Meeting in March.

Starting to gather steam, at last!

As ever, I thought I would get so much completed and then failed miserably!
I hadn't realised just how ill I had become.
I was forced to retire early on medical grounds last March and have been steadily trying to get better ever since. I have tried Mindfullness courses that have helped a bit and had some hearing aids with special white noise generators built into them fitted. They have made a big difference but it wasn't until in the summer, on a beach, trying to take them out and go swimming, when I realised how much I now rely on them.
Anyway, modelling. The etches from last year have been made up as much as I could - still just finishing the loco. They needed a bit of tweaking as I said when I saw the brass. I spent some time recently feeling better so have started on this task.

The pictures show the Type 8D, a Craven 2nd at 4mm scale. A bluebell survivor albeit in bits at the moment. This is the third carriage from Merton at Wimbledon in the 1870s in the photo on page 111 of Vol 1 of the fabulous White, Turner & Foulkes books on LB&SCR Carriages.
I have a few minor corrections then this will be etched to order, expressions of interest please.

Mike Waldron has been so patient waiting for the Craven Brake Van with Birdcage and Ducket so that will be next. Again, I tested this about 8 years ago (!!!!) and it just needs to have the body to underframe join sorted out and the position of the birdcage sorted out so the top fold over from the sides can be removed where this occurs.
This is the one I am referring to. It will be slightly more expensive that other carriages as there are four layers of etch to build up the framing and so it is almost a full A4 size etch.

I have also found the 6 wheel underframe I worked on. Some of you have asked for these. I will get some etched to order.
I think I changed the brakes to be more slender and may have also given it springing. I will look out the drawings.

There are various other completed etches that I can order: Dia 18 saloon, Dia 38 1st Coupe, Dia 23 and 24 the 2nd saloons, Bullion van. There were others but those have already been etched now.

In 7mm, I have sent off for some more copies of the Type 13A Craven 1st. They will be available at the AGM for £36 each. Postage extra if not collected at the AGM.  I shall have 6 spare to sell then unless people reserve them first? They are at the etchers now as well as a couple in Gauge 3 which seem huge!

I will try and progress the locos and other etches a bit by then also.

Well I will bring things to the AGM as I have the rail ticket already bought this year and hope to see you there. I will try and update some more before then.

Many thanks for your continued support, I have needed it!
Cheers, Ian

The etches have arrived!

Received a nice parcel this lunchtime. Just looking through them now. Have made a few errors on the carriages but the loco and tender looks fine. I think the tinnitus stopped me checking things
as thoroughly as in the past hence a few silly errors. This is the loco body etches.
the tender body etches.
and this is the nickel silver chassis parts.

The Craven 1st has a
few errors and only one end! The Craven 2nd is better, I think this is all okay apart from the ventilators above the doors.
The Dia 51 Meat Van looks okay.
The Dia 49 Bullion Van has a couple of issues, it etched okay last time but needs some sorting this time. I don't understand why at present so will spend some time looking at any differences between the etch drawing a few years ago and this one.
There were also a couple of other bits, one was C2X brakes and springs for a member but there will be a couple spare.
So, that is what has been received. I had better try and get some completed before the AGM.

More later.

Progress at last but in a slightly different direction

Hi again!

I have been off work since May 2015. Unfortunately after the last post, I was ill again and then busy getting back to work and keeping the Brighton Circular magazine in production which has always taken a huge chunk of my available modelling time. Most enjoyable as it allows access to some marvellous sources, photography and people but it has never been an easy publication to put together.
As many of you may know, Klaus, the Editor, has also been ill and has had to stand down. I have very severe tinnitus and from May through to only a couple of weeks back, it was so intrusive as to severely interrupt my thoughts so much so that even connecting sentences has been difficult. My brain hurts!!! (Monty Python interlude)

I have had an MRI scan and the noise of that was still less than the tinnitus noise in my head! I am having therapy and am learning to concentrate again. In fact, my consultant expressed the use of a computer to draw things technically as a very good therapy as I can put autosave on, make copious paper notes or electronic ones, and gradually use it to extend my span of concentration. He suggested I start on a new project.

So where are we going with this?

Well, a Craven loco! I still haven't finished the Craven Goods but have a good idea now on what needs doing but in the meantime, the new project is 153/4, 1862 single which became Spithead and Southsea.
I have finished the etch drawings and they are at the etchers at the moment. I have drawn them for all 3 4mm gauges and I have also got a set ready for 7mm. The 4mm ones are at the etchers. IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED IN A SET FOR 7MM PLEASE EMAIL ME. A ROUGH ESTIMATE OF £125 FOR THE 7MM ETCHES.
I am looking at getting parts cast in 4 and 7mm via Slaters. I had a chat with David White yesterday at Telford, my first trip out since May! The 7mm wheels would cost £69 for the complete loco and tender as the tender needs coach split spoke wheels. The loco and tender have been designed to be sprung or solid or a bit of both. It is the Craven version as pictured. The Stroudley rebuild needs an almost complete new loco body but that can be done as well, later.

I am also getting carriages etched. There is a Dia 51 Meat Van, a Dia 49 Bullion, a Craven 1st, No 204 and a Craven 2nd No 35. The latter two are as per those at the Bluebell and any profits go to the Craven Carriage Fund. These are being translated into 7mm as well as they would look lovely behind a Terrier! Yes I bought one!

I also have several other drawings ready for the etchers - the Craven 2nd type 8B, the Craven 1868 brake van with duckets and birdcage (although I may get the framing laser cut), Dia 23 and 24 Stroudley 2nd Saloons, a Dia 22 First saloon, a Dia 18 First saloon, a Dia 39 1st Coupe, and two I have to check with Mike Waldron about. The Dia 40 1st brakes and the Dia 42 Lav Compo, both of which have been shown as test etches on here and have been seen at the Brighton Circle AGM the year before last. I don't know if he has actually got these into production or not.

Then there is the early Pullman carriages to complete. Almost there. And I am looking at the matching carriages for the Craven 2nds, as per the Wimbledon photo of Merton. The second and third carriage are already completed.

So, hopefully, I will be keeping this going in a bid to get better with my health, and also to try and use the modelling to relax with as well.

Lastly, the Brighton Circle need help in the production of the magazine. Not difficult, just a bit time consuming. Done on Publisher and sent electronically as pdfs for printing. Let the secretary know if you can help please.

Do please express interest in the 7mm especially but let me know if anything whets your whistle. I will get etches done soon.

Carriage etches almost ready, everything seems to take so long though!

Hi again,
I am trying to keep modelling but seem to have huge gaps between time at the workbench. There are many other interests and demands on my time and modelling or developing etches always seems to get put back! Very frustrating for me as well, I suppose for others that would like some of them!

I am hoping to find time in the next couple of months after I have the new printing process for the Circular sorted out.
Cheers
Ian
